Some farmers think that "any raw material can be dumped in," but the pellet mill not only becomes noisy but also frequently clogs. In fact, improper raw material processing is like giving the machine a "hard bone"—it can't chew it, and naturally it will "make noise." Today, we'll discuss which raw material issues cause noise and how to handle them.

Three reasons

1. Raw material moisture content is unsuitable (noise from forced extrusion)

Causes: If the raw material is too dry (moisture content below 12%), it will be loose like sand, making it difficult for the pressure rollers to squeeze, causing it to idle and produce a muffled "humming" sound, and also producing broken pieces; if the raw material is too wet (moisture content above 18%), it will stick to the pressure rollers and ring die, clogging the die holes, causing the machine to overload, producing a muffled "clunking" sound, or even stopping.

Solutions: Use a hygrometer to measure the moisture content of the raw material and maintain it between 14-16% (the raw material should be able to be squeezed into a ball by hand, but crumble easily when gently touched). If it is too dry, spray some water into the raw material and stir well; if it is too wet, spread the raw material out to dry, or use a dryer to dry it for a while, do not pour it directly into the machine.

2. Raw material particle size too coarse (grinding noise)

Cause: The raw material is not properly crushed (e.g., corn kernels are too large, straw is not ground properly). When the pressure rollers and ring die squeeze it, it will make a grinding sound like "grinding a stone," which is not only noisy but also accelerates the wear of the pressure rollers and ring die, resulting in uneven pellet output.

Solution: After crushing the raw material, filter it with a sieve to ensure that the particle size is below 1.0-2.0 mm (approximately the size of millet grains). If the crusher sieve is too coarse, replace it with a fine sieve; coarse fiber raw materials such as straw should be ground twice to ensure uniform crushing, and large pieces of straw should not be fed into the pellet mill.

3. Raw materials contain hard impurities (impact noise)

Cause: The raw materials contain hard objects such as stones, metal shavings, and plastic bags. These impurities act like small hammers, impacting the pressure rollers and ring die, producing a clear "clanging" sound. In severe cases, they can deform the ring die holes or even damage the pressure rollers.

Solution: Before feeding, always use two layers of screens to filter the raw materials—use a 5mm screen for large impurities (such as plastic bags and large stones) on the top layer, and a 2mm screen for small impurities on the bottom layer; install a magnet at the feed inlet to attract metal shavings and prevent impurities from "slipping" into the machine.
